This modeling study predicts suitable habitat for S. stercoralis in ten states beyond the southeastern US where the parasite has been reported, expanding the theoretical risk of this STH into large swaths of the country where clinicians are unaware of its potential to cause fatal disease. The study provides evidence to support the recommendation that 16 states in the ecological range of the parasite should conduct surveillance for it and promote education of clinicians so that suspicion for this infection can be appropriately applied to at-risk patients.
