For a successful pregnancy, the mother’s immune system must learn to tolerate her genetically distinct fetus. An important aspect of this tolerance is the progressive expansion of maternal FOXP3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells during pregnancy. This expansion is driven by fetal cells transferred to the mother during pregnancy, establishing fetal microchimerism after birth. In parallel, maternal cells also deposit in the offspring to establish maternal microchimerism.
