To the Editor We read with great interest the systematic review by Drake et al1 that evaluated research regarding the efficacy of nutritional supplements for hair loss. We recognize additional considerations that were not highlighted in the review as limitations.
Although the authors concluded that nutritional supplements may potentially treat hair loss, they do not establish which types of hair loss would be most effectively treated with supplements. Since much of the evidence presented was from patients with nonscarring alopecia, it is important to educate patients and clinicians that nutritional supplements are unlikely to treat the irreversible hair follicle destruction associated with scarring alopecia.
