Based on the results from the member survey, two special online symposia were organized in 2024. The first symposium was co-organized with the IPNA Committee on Priorities in Low Resource Countries on chronic kidney disease care in low-resource settings. The second symposium was organized to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of IPNA. Two distinct sessions were arranged to match the time zones of IPNA members. Distinguished speakers from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America were invited to give talks on the achievements of IPNA and important medical advances in pediatric nephrology over the last five decades. The success of these two online symposia marks a new focus for professional education in pediatric nephrology that can effectively benefit medical care at a global scale. In the future, disease-specific (e.g., nephrotic syndrome) and goal-specific (e.g., clinical research) symposia can be organized.
Another important future direction of webinar development is to synchronize webinar offerings with the newly developed IPNA Global Pediatric Nephrology Curriculum, which has been established to harmonize educational programs in pediatric nephrology on all continents [6]. We plan to present webinar topics designed in different webinar formats, based on the curriculum, to provide and equip trainees with the latest knowledge, skills, and attitudes important in developing the most significant competences of a practicing pediatric nephrologist during professional training [7].
Clinical practice guideline webinars remain the fundamental cornerstone of IPNA’s webinars, as reflected by their popularity and high attendance rates. Interactive components such as live polling during webinars, case illustrations, surveys on preferred topics as well as pre-registered questions can further enhance the interaction between speakers and the audience, improve clinical applicability, and tailor the most suitable topics and contents. Given the high attendance from low-income countries, relevant topics such as the prevention and management of acute kidney injury in low-resource settings will be beneficial to the audience. Pediatric nephrology nurses, allied health workers, and patients should also be more actively involved as target audiences to promote multi-disciplinary patient-centered care of various kidney conditions.
