Responsible research in the practice of anatomy: Attributes relevant to body donors and human tissues sourced from them

Responsible Research is an emerging notion in academic domain and its various attributes are being explored by scholars with regards to research in anatomical sciences (Mwaka, 2017, Maugeri and Musumeci, 2020). The concept of Responsible Research possibly applies most appropriately to the source of human tissues in ethical manner and ethical handling thereof. As per recommendations of International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) body donation constitutes the sole source of human tissues through ethical means (FICEM, 2012, FICEM, 2018). Hence, body donors through their selfless contribution are essentially making human tissue based research possible in anatomical sciences. Considering this fact, it transpires as ethical and moral responsibility of the researcher(s) to acknowledge the silent and selfless contribution of body donors (Ghosh, 2020, Ghosh, 2020, Kreissl Lonfat et al., 2015). Therefore, it was hypothesized that it would be prudent to explore the diverse attributes of Responsible Research in relation to body donors as applied to research practice in anatomy. It is imperative that anatomists at multiple levels of research in academia such as authors/ reviewers/ editors/ publishers/ conference organizers undertake concerted efforts to promote adoption and implementation of the diverse attributes of Responsible Research (Zealley, 2022). This would be a welcome proceeding towards building a prospective outlook of the discipline amidst the evolving scenario of enhancement in ethical standards within the realm of academic domain.

In view of the arguments as presented here, the present study will attempt to probe into the recent scenario regarding the adoption as well as implementation of attributes of Responsible Research in relation to contribution of body donors in human tissue based research, handling of human tissues sourced from body donors in an ethical manner, expression of gratitude by research community in the form of acknowledgement addressed to body donors and role of potential influencers (editor and publisher of scientific journals) in support of the exercise. Based on the core attributes that comes to the surface during presentation of relevant details of the study, few recommendations will be proposed at the conclusion with a view to facilitate the implementation of the virtues of Responsible Research in relation to body donors in anatomical research practice.
