WHO, What, When, Where, and Why: New Classification Systems for Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Their Impact on Clinical Practice

For those interested in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 2022 may be remembered as the year of reclassification. In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) published the 5th edition of their classification schema, while a separate system was published by a group of experts under the title of the International Consensus Classification (ICC)1,2. In addition, the European LeukemiaNet (ELN) provided an update of their recommendations for the diagnosis and management of AML, which is not a separate classification schema, but rather suggestions about how to use those that exist3. The following discussion summarizes the composite changes proposed by WHO and ICC, notes where they differ, and then presents the major revisions in the 2022 ELN recommendations.
