Pregnancy in systemic lupus erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with a wide range of clinical manifestations and a relapsing-remitting course. This complex disease generally affects women of childbearing age, and pregnancy therefore represents a challenge for patients and clinicians.

Despite improvements in the management of SLE pregnancies in recent years, women with SLE are still at higher risk of maternal and fetal complications compared to the general population [1].

Several risk factors have been identified for both disease flare and obstetric complications, appropriate preconception counseling and close monitoring by a multidisciplinary team are required to improve the pregnancy outcomes of these patients.

This review is focused on describing the possible effects of pregnancy on SLE, the possible effects of the disease on pregnancy, and the updated developments in therapy and clinical management during pregnancy in SLE patients.
