Gauging the motivation Level of Health Personnel of Tertiary Care Hospital in District Dehradun- a web-based study

Background- The shortage of healthcare providers not only affects the performance but also hinders the quality of health care that is dispensed as well, which adds to the below-standard functionality of the healthcare delivery system. Health care providers serve as the backbone of the health care delivery system and motivation among them tends to play a critical role in improving their performance in the health system, sadly this is the arduous element that is ensured. The rising concern for any senior is to successfully understand the motivational factors for the employees to keep them motivated.

Aims & Objectives- The present study was undertaken to determine the level of motivation among the health care personnel and delve into various motivational factors for an employee working in a tertiary health care institution in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

Methodology- A Cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 healthcare personnel. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software (version 23) and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze the data. For categorical data, the frequency with percentages was utilized, and mean SD was used for continuous variables. The Chi-Square test or the Fischer Exact test were employed to examine the relationship between categorical variables.

Results- Technicians were found to be highly motivated in all the study groups. Maximum doctors had a low motivational index. On comparing all the components of motivation, “rewards” assumed the first rank among doctors, nurses, and technicians. The main motivating factors for the health personnel as stated by them were monetary support, incentives, and promotion followed by the provision of better resources and appreciation, feedback, and communication by seniors. Security, job assurance, training, good teamwork, and proper management were also motivating factors for the study participants.

Conclusion- A job-satisfied health worker not only encourages his/her colleagues but also maintains a positive environment for the smooth functioning of all activities. When the health staff is not motivated and dissatisfied this directly affects the working of the institution or any health organization. Pleased and satisfied health personnel render excellent services not only to their patients but also creates a good working culture with their fellows. The management should recognize the non-financial motivators like appreciation, teamwork, opportunities, feedback, professional growth, and training which are equally important motivating reasons for health apart from monetary things.
