[Comment] Towards meaningful change: the future of gastroenterology belongs to women, diversity, equity, and inclusion

When reflecting on 2020, the term unprecedented is the resounding descriptor for not only the events that occurred, but also the emotions, responses, and consequences that the world experienced. It was a year of many crises, from the scale of death and illness from COVID-19 to the public health and socioeconomic challenges it inflicted; from witnessing the horror of racism and societal inequities, to the unforgiving forces of natural disasters. In the face of this tsunami of challenges, women throughout the world demonstrated resilience, innovation, and adaptability to steward our communities to safety and advocate for health and social equity. Female political leaders managed the COVID crisis with decisiveness and the quick implementation of safeguards to contain the pandemic. Social movements such as Black Lives Matter and #MeToo galvanised forces to battle racism and gender-based discrimination. Virtual learning and connectivity became the new norm and social media the new outlet for education, opinions, identity, and accountability.
