Teaching Caregivers to Use Graduated Guidance Using Video Modeling

Highlights.

• Video modeling with a narrated generic exemplar video was sufficient for caregivers to use graduated guidance instruction with their young children with autism spectrum disorder.

• Feedback from the trainer was not required for caregivers to achieve mastery of implementing the graduated guidance procedure.

• Mastery of the graduated guidance teaching skill was achieved in less than 27 min of cumulative training for all three families for whom efficiency data were collected.

• Following training, caregivers agreed that the video modeling approach was appropriate for teaching them to use graduated guidance, that they would recommend it to other caregivers, and that they believed they could apply graduated guidance to teach other skills to their children.
