Professor Rakesh Kumar, a molecular cancer biologist, holds the Endowed Chair Professor and Distinguished Emeritus Professor position at the Cancer Research Institute, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, India. Professor Kumar is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Breast Cancer in Young Women Foundation, a non-profit international organization based in the United States. The foundation is dedicated to saving the lives of young women affected by breast cancer by promoting and supporting awareness and advanced research and advocacy. He is also an adjunct professor at the Rutgers New Jersey School of Medicine and the Virginia Commonwealth School of Medicine in the United States.
Originally hailing from Himalayan hillocks, Professor Kumar's academic journey began with a master's degree in Chemistry from Bareilly College in 1976. Building upon his strong Foundation, he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi in 1984. Following a brief stint at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, he began a new chapter by relocating to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in January 1986. Throughout his career spanning nearly forty years, he played a significant role as an academician at leading Cancer Centers and Universities in the United States as a tenured faculty member from 1996 until 2017, including more than two decades at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center - New York City and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center - Houston. During this time, Professor Kumar held several institutional academic and research leadership positions, served as a department deputy chair and chair, as an endowed distinguished professor, and endowed chairs in the United States. Alongside his scientific career in the United States, Professor Kumar remained devoted to cancer research and mentoring the country's next generation of scientists in the United States and India. In 2017, he returned to India as a Govt of India National Chair in Cancer Research and Distinguished Professor at the Rajiv Gandhi Center for Biotechnology, where he served until 2022, before joining as a Distinguished Emeritus Professor at the Swami Rama Himalayan University.
Professor Kumar's research contributions have been innovative and foresight in cancer research. For example, while defining the mechanism of growth inhibitory activity of monoclonal antibody 4D5 against the HER2 receptor, in collaboration with Professor John Mendelsohn, he discovered its ability to block HER2 tyrosine phosphorylation and inhibit HER2 signaling. The mAb4D5 was later humanized and developed as Herceptin by Genentech; similarly, in collaboration with Professor John Mendelsohn – the inventor of Cetuximab, Professor Kumar established that one of the mechanisms of action of the anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody C225/ Cetuximab functions involve interruption of an extracellular autocrine loop—a finding essential for the clinical development of the first generation of targeted anti-HER therapeutics. Over time, his studies have opened new avenues for further exploration of growth factor receptors, estrogen signaling, and regulatory mechanisms of gene expression. His impact extends beyond academic contributions, with over three hundred research articles, invited reviews in esteemed scientific journals, and editing nine books or volumes, including the current monograph. Stanford University data from the past four years has consistently ranked Professor Kumar among the under 0.30% of oncology and carcinogenesis scientists globally. Professor Kumar's excellence isn't limited to research and publications. He has been an active member of variouseditorial boards for leading cancer research journals for nearly twenty-five years. He continues to serve on the board of several journals at the forefront of cancer research. He has also contributed his scientific expertise to nearly 100 peer-review panels of national and international funding agencies for over three decades, including the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and Veteran Administration of the United States, multiple foreign governmental funding agencies, DBT-Welcome Trust, India-French and India-German Alliance Funding Programs, Breast Cancer Foundations, and the Monitoring Committee of the National Breast Cancer Genome and the Making Cancer Care Affordable Projects.
The recognition of Professor Kumar's original research contributions has led to several prestigious awards and honors throughout his career. Notable accolades include the 1995 Outstanding Investigator Award from the Hinkle Society of Penn State University College ofMedicine, the 2004 MD Anderson Cancer Center Faculty Achievement Award in Basic Sciences, the 2004 Norman Brinker Award for Research Excellence, the 2006 Ranbaxy (Sun Pharma) Research Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences, the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Indian Scientists in Cancer Research. Beyond his research accomplishments, Professor Kumar has made a profound impact as a mentor, guiding and training over 67 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and physician-scientists. Many of his mentees now hold esteemed faculty positions worldwide, including the United States, India (i.e., Indian Institute of Technology -Chennai and -Kharagpur, Institute of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad, Indian Liver and Biliary Sciences, etc.) China, Italy, and other countries. Sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience, Professor Kumar has delivered over 280 invited lectures at national and international scientific conferences, universities, medical schools, and hospitals.
In 2023, Professor Kumar led a significant step by establishing the first Breast Cancer in Young Women Foundation in the United States and globally. The Foundation's vision is to create a reality in which the death of a young woman from breast cancer becomes a rare event.
