The term “trauma-informed care” is used pervasively throughout multiple fields, yet it lacks a standardized definition across the various disciplines incorporating it into practice. The term is commonly used among professionals working with children—particularly those who have or may be at risk of experiencing child maltreatment. As such, trauma-informed care encompasses the principles of identifying the protective and risk factors for trauma, understanding the implications trauma can have on multiple facets of a patient's health, development, and well-being, and approaching trauma in an empathetic and strength-based manner. Additionally, trauma-informed care includes the awareness of and addressing the impact exposure to trauma has on professionals who care for those experiencing trauma.1
