Liposarcomas of the pharynx: A case report

Liposarcomas are one of the most common sarcomas diagnosed in adults and are most frequently found in the extremities, trunk and retroperitoneum [1]. However, liposarcomas in the pharynx are extremely rare with less than 40 cases reported in the literature [2]. These lesions tend to be well-differentiated and typically present with progressively worsening dysphagia [3,4]. Airway obstruction, hoarseness and globus sensation have also been associated with pharyngeal liposarcomas [5]. The current standard of care is removal as the progressive dysphagia can lead to significant weight loss [4,5]. Recurrence is common, which may be due to the location of the tumor preventing a complete resection [2]. The five-year survival rate is 100 %, and rarely do these tumors de-differentiate or metastasize [2]. In this case series we present two cases of pharyngeal liposarcomas, highlighting the challenges of surgical exposure and the importance of airway management at this subsite.
