Mental health outcomes and suicidality in hospitalized transgender adolescents: A propensity score-matched Cross-sectional analysis of the National inpatient sample 2016–2018

Transgender adolescents have to deal with particular difficulties related to societal acceptance and mental health (White Hughto et al., 2015). This demographic has a higher chance of experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and mood disorders (Clements-Nolle et al., 2006, Hajek et al., 2023, Russell and Fish, 2016).

However, there remains a significant gap in the literature, particularly in large-scale comparative studies focusing on the mental health and suicidality of transgender adolescents in inpatient settings. Previous research made contributions but lacked a comprehensive picture because of methodological constraints and no proper control group (Thoma et al., 2019).

Our study will compare the mental health outcomes of hospitalized transgender adolescents 12–17 years old to a large group of non-transgender adolescents. We hypothesize that transgender adolescents in hospital settings are more likely to manifest higher incidences of suicidality and other psychiatric comorbidities when compared to their non-transgender counterparts. This study aims to offer new insights that could help shape more effective mental health interventions for this vulnerable population.
